The world and I

hi,
i am a brand ambassador on msn-green, would like to share my first blog there called "The world and I"

Ah, the Copenhagen climate summit! Around 200 world leaders got together in the Danish capital to decide if our future generations will be able to breadth fresh air and drink clean water. Millions of dollars spent and a lot of noise created, all to save the earth.

But just a minute... I am still trying to come to terms with the outcome. Was it a joke? Or was it a step in the right direction? In fact, was there any outcome at all? For those who say that at last there was a consensus of sorts, I ask: Aren’t we beyond the phase when ‘steps in the right direction’ and ‘consensus of sorts’ mean anything?

We don’t need ‘steps’ dear friends, we need leaps and bounds, in fact we need to RUN. And run very fast if we have to do anything about reversing the impact of climate change.

There are ample reports available, if you care to read one, that even if the world slashes its greenhouse gas emission by 70%, it would not stop global warming. But yes such a cut should stabilise temperatures at a mark not too much higher than today.

It is clear that the earth will heat up. The only thing we can control by our efforts is the level of the rise in temperature.

And speaking of efforts, symbolic gestures, singing songs and planting a few trees is a gag that many of us foolishly believe will solve the problem. Or turning off the lights when you leave a room, or not letting water go waste when you brush your teeth. Come of people, do you really need to be told such things? Isn’t this simple common sense?

Man and nature have co-existed for thousands of years. But in the last 150 years, ever since the industrial revolution, we have managed to undo that oneness with nature, and rapidly so.

We might think we are very progressive, and we have made abundant growth in the field of science and medicine, but in the big picture we are just destroying the very home we live in… gnawing away on our earth like parasites.

Climate change can only be reversed with a fundamental change in attitude... a NEED to recreate and replenish the world that we have so rampantly destroyed; a sense of not hurting the environment in whatever you do, weather it is creating films or making cars.

Change begins with me and no one else and I need to set my own standards.

No amount of legally binding emission laws can get us what we really need. When something is ‘enforced’ upon people, the natural instinct is to resist. And the Copenhagen summit was a perfect example of a resistance. If world leaders had thought about things beyond their limited economic boundaries, maybe the climate talks could have been a success.

We need to realize that the environment cannot be saved because someone tells us so… it needs to be done for purely selfish interests. For each one of us. For me. This is our planet. We just need to listen to ourselves and we will hear the true voice which will tell us the right thing to do.

If there is a conscious change in our attitude at a primary level, then coexistence with nature, the way it is meant to be, will become a way of life. The future generations need to claim their world back, inch by inch, foot by foot, acre by acre, region by region. That’s the only way.

“Aye saala...abhi abhi hua yaqeen
Ki aag hai mujh mein kahi....

... dhuan chataa khula gagan mera
nayi dagar naya safar mera
jo ban sake tu hamsafar mera
nazar mila zara...”
